The siamese algae eater is a tolerant fish that is an exceptional algae eater. Ranging up to 15 cm, it is the only fish that will also graze on 'Black Brush Algae,' which are freshwater Rhodophyta, or Red algae.
The siamese algae eater is often confused with the flying fox and the "false siamensis", which are of no use to the aquarist for algae-eating purposes.
Suitable temperature is 24 - 26 °C (75 - 79 °F). They can tolerate pH from 5.5 to 8.0, but 6.5 - 7.0 is ideal. Hardness should be less than 20 dH.
