Lava rocks
Lava rocks usually comes in two forms - big pieces for decorative
purposes, and small pieces for biological filtration purposes. One of the more
famous brand of lava rock is Eheim Ehfilav.
"Lava rocks
are actually inefficient for bacteria-housing purposes, even when
compared to the humble ceramic rings."
Although widely used, there are reports that suggest that lava rocks
are actually inefficient for bacteria-housing purposes, even when
compared to the humble ceramic rings. This is due to the internal
structure of the lava rock. As the holes inside of it are not linked to
its surface, water is unable to pass through. Thus the only place that
can house bacteria, is the exterior of the lava rock.
Thus if you had plans to use lava rocks, it is best if you look at
something else. Another filtration media that is as affordable as lava
rocks, would be ceramic rings.
