Sintered glass
While ceramic rings are sufficient if you use them in large amounts,
but what if you have filters like hang-on-back filters, which are
mostly very limited in space? It would be more appropriate to use
something like sintered glass, as it is one of the most space-efficient
biological filtration media right now in the market. Some branded
sintered glass like Biohome even claim to provide 7300 sq. ft. of
surface area per kg of their product!

Good things comes with a price, they cost significantly more than
ceramic rings. If you have a large filter to pack, I would suggest
mixing sintered glass with other more economical media. And like the
ceramic rings, be sure to have good mechanical filtration before your
sintered glass. You don't want your sintered glass to get so clogged up
that no water can pass through its tunnels, causing its effective
surface area to drop rock-bottom.
