Ceramic rings (Rough surface)
For the purpose of biological filtration, make sure to get the rough
surface type. The smooth surface ceramic rings are not porous enough to
house any significant amount of bacteria. They are meant for
mechanical filtration, and to disperse water flow into many paths,
creating even distribution of water for subsequent filtration media.

"Be sure to have a good mechanical filtration layer before
your ceramic rings, it will help keep your rings less clogged for a
longer time."
Ceramic rings are the choice of many, due to its economical price. If
you got lots of filter room, ceramic rings are a good choice as you can
buy large amounts without costing you a bomb.
And finally, be sure to have a good mechanical filtration layer before
your ceramic rings, it will help keep your rings less clogged for a
longer time. A clogged media prevents water from flowing through them,
thus becoming less effective.
